Last November, the Ninth Gallery team and a total of 9 Malaysian and Singaporean brands flew to Taipei for Pop Up Asia 2018!
If you haven’t heard of Pop Up Asia, they are the world’s first handicraft trade fair dedicated to fostering creative dialogues between handicraft entrepreneurs, artisans, suppliers and organizers in Asia. Pop Up Asia launched in November 2016 and became an annual event in Taiwan. Besides Taiwanese exhibitors, international brands from Japan, Korea, Hong Kong, Thailand and Malaysia have presented their creative works and innovative ideas at Pop Up Asia throughout the years.
Beginning as a platform for creators and makers, Pop Up Asia 2018 played host to 300 brands from over 20 Asian cities; ranging from homegrown handicraft brands, entrepreneurs, raw materials suppliers and manufacturers. By bringing together companies from a variety of backgrounds and industries; Pop Up Asia aims to create a holistic handicraft ecosystem that allows vendors to turn their passion into a living.
Each Pop Up Asia market has a new theme. In 2018, it was “Asia Link”, signifying a wish to redefine Asian culture and nurture more interdisciplinary partnerships through creativity and originality.
Which brings us to MAKERS; a collaboration between Pop Up Asia and Ninth Gallery to bring local handicraft artisans into the international limelight. We urged Malaysian and Singaporean brands to submit their most innovative and original works to win a place at the MAKERS booth at Pop Up Asia. The top 5 brands also won a flight and hotel sponsorship to Pop Up Asia to showcase their brand and meet other makers and manufacturers.
In 2018, we traveled to Pop Up Asia with our top 5 winners:
- Bendang Studio
- Oh & Ah
- Batik Boutique
We also brought along products from our other brand winners:
- The Apocathery
- Oh Leaf
- Fun With Artz
* Due to unforeseen circumstances, 2 brands could not join us in Taiwan for Pop Up Asia
Our Pop Up Asia 2018 experience was incredible! We landed in Taipei in the late afternoon the day before the event; giving us just a couple of hours to set up before heading back to our hotels. Boy was that a rush!
For the next 4 days (the 15th to the 18th of November 2018), we joined over 20 Asian cities in showing our handmade and homegrown brands, manufacturers and creators. Featuring over 200 workshops, international forums and business matching events, the event was such a great opportunity for newbies to make their mark.
The energy we experienced at Pop Up Asia was infectious. We were overwhelmed by the support of the market goers and vendors throughout the 4 days at the Song Shan Cultural and Creative Park. From participating in international forums to meeting new and inspiring makers and creators, we had an incredible time and are truly grateful for the opportunity to collaborate with the organizers of Pop Up Asia to host MAKERS 2018.
Our first appearance as MAKERS from Malaysia and Singapore has opened up new doors of opportunity for our local creative designers through Pop Up Asia. We hope that, through this platform, we can continue to help expand our home grown talent and create a successful, sustainable and international handmade design industry from our little corner of the planet.
If this sounds like something you’re into, get ready for our second round of MAKERS! Check out our MAKERS PAGE for more information on how to join us for our next trip.
